Code of Conduct
School Rules
Learners will comply with the following school rules and failure to do so is liable to punishment.
1. CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIES
All learners must take responsibility for their work and accept the consequences of not doing so.
- Learners must look after their books. Text books are the property of the School and learners are responsible for any damage or loss incurred.
- A high standard of neatness is expected. Learners must take pride in the appearance of their work.
- Learners must meet deadlines and hand work in on time. Homework is an integral part of the education process and must be completed. Homework Notebooks to be signed daily by parent/guardian.
- If a learner is absent from school it is his/her responsibility to catch up any work that he/she has missed.
- Learners must not interrupt the flow of the lesson or through disruptive behaviour, inhibit the opportunity of others to learn.
1.6 Copying of work or cheating will be considered a serious misdemeanour.
1.7 Learners may not leave the classroom without permission.
1.8 Calling out or eating/drinking in class is unacceptable.
1.9 All forms of vandalism will not be tolerated, such as writing on desks.
1.10 No toys may be brought to school.
1.11 Learners may not enter classrooms if the teacher is not there.
1.12 Learners may not pass notes or any other printed material.
2. COURTESY AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS
Consideration, care and tolerance for others should characterise all conduct.
- The following behaviours, which are hurtful and show disrespect for others, are strictly forbidden:
2.1.1 the use of obscene, abusive or bad language or back-chatting.
2.1.2 the making of any remarks likely to lead to religious or racial discord.
2.1.3 bullying and intimidation of any sort, whether physical or psychological or any other form of violent behaviour or attack.
2.1.4 interference in any way with a person or personal belongings of others or theft.
2.1.5 spitting, kicking, biting, fighting or any other form of molestation or attack.
2.1.6 temper tantrums.
2.1.7 Loud talking/shouting or any offensive behaviour.
2.2 Learners should have respect for others and greet and assist visitors to the School.
2.3 Learners must keep left on the corridors. Movement around the school must be quick and quiet. There must be no undue noise and no running on the corridors. Learners must stand aside for staff or visitors, when staff or visitors pass by in the corridors or on the fields.
2.4 Talking in the hall or assembly areas is not permitted.
2.5 No one may enter a classroom, pool area, or the hall if there is no teacher present.
2.6 All students must ensure that rooms, verandahs and grounds are kept free of litter. Littering is a punishable offence.
2.7 Monitors are selected to help the staff. All reasonable requests by them should be obeyed.
2.8 The use or possession of the following items at school or any school function is strictly forbidden
2.8.1 any apparatus for throwing or firing of any object
2.8.2 fireworks, matches and other flammable substances
2.8.3 weapons of any description, including penknives, catapults etc
2.8.4 all pornographic materials
2.8.5 alcohol or any form of drug or toxic substance (any medication should be handed to class teacher at the beginning of the day for safekeeping)
2.8.6 electronic devices such as cell phones
2.9 Parents may not approach teachers without first making a suitable appointment.
2.10 Parents may not drive their motor cars onto the school property.
3. ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL AND ILLNESS AT SCHOOL
DAILY ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY.
3.1 All learners are expected to attend school on a regular basis.
3.2 A learner who has been absent from school, must bring a written note explaining the absence, signed by the parent/guardian, on the first day of his/her return to school.
3.3 A written explanation is necessary if a child is unable to participate in P.E.lessons.
3.4. If a learner is ill at school, the class teacher must be informed. She/He will ensure that the learner is escorted to the secretary’s office where appropriate action will be taken.
3.5 Parents must inform the school in writing of any infectious diseases in the household. In cases where a learner wishes to return following an infectious disease contraction, a written medical clearance is required from a registered medical doctor. (The school reserves the right to confirm with the doctor if necessary)
3.6 Parents/Guardians are requested to inform the class teacher of serious allergies or medical conditions which may require specialised attention.
3.7 Nobody is allowed to leave the school grounds without the permission of the principal or the Head of Department.
3.8 Parents may not enter the school grounds needlessly.
3.9 Parents must advise the school in writing when a child is leaving the school. One term’s notice or fees in lieu thereof, are payable, when a child leaves the school, prior to the end of Grade iii.
4. DRESS AND APPEARANCE
4.1 Prescribed school uniform, as approved by the Governing Body, must be worn at school and at approved school functions.
4.2 When in school uniform learners must be neatly dressed in the full uniform at all times whether they are in the school grounds or not.
4.3 Personal cleanliness and hygiene must be observed at all times.
4.4 Clothing such as coloured jerseys, windbreakers, beanies, scarves and non-regulation takkies may not be worn with the school uniform.
4.5 All articles of clothing worn at school must be clean, in good condition (no faded or torn clothing allowed to be worn) and clearly marked with the child’s name.
4.6 The correct sports clothing must be worn for practises and games.
4.7 After extra-mural activities learners may go home in their full kit or full school uniform. After swimming however, learners must change into full school uniform.
4.8 On cold days, school tracksuits may be worn to school.
4.9 Girls:
4.9.1 Full school uniform must be worn daily. No track pants and jersey combination.
4.9.2 Only white regulation takkies.
4.9.3 White, regulation ankle (short) socks.
4.9.4 No jewellery is to be worn. Girls may wear black, silver or gold watches, one pair of small, plain stud or plain sleeper earrings only. No earrings with ‘pretty stones’ of any sort are permitted. Approved Medic-Alert tags round neck or wrist may be worn, if necessary.
4.9.5 No hair colouring, nail varnish or make-up or lip gloss.
4.9.6 Hair, if long should be tied back. If short, should be kept away from the face. No coloured hair extensions nor hair beads are permitted. If braids are used, there must be no styling. Neat, thin braids are to be used. No thick braids allowed.
4.9.7 Metal clips, black, white or blue may be used to keep hair from
face.
4.9.8 Fingernails should be clean and level with fingertips.
4.9.9 Jerseys may not be worn off the shoulders and sleeves may not be pushed up.
4.10 Boys:
4.10.1 Full school uniform must be worn daily. No track pants and jersey combination.
4.10.2 Only white regulation takkies.
4.10.2 White, regulation ankle (short) socks.
4.10.2 No jewellery may be worn with the exception of black, silver or gold watches and approved Medic-Alert tags, if necessary.
4.10.3 Jerseys may not be worn off the shoulders and sleeves may not be pushed up.
4.10.4 Hair must be trimmed to expose the ears and be clear of the collar and eyebrows. No extreme haircuts are permitted. Not allowed to have different shaved levels of hair, all the same length. Hair may not be of a longer length at the back or on top. Hair may not be bleached or coloured. Long hair, on boys, is not allowed.
4.11 The school cannot be held responsible for damage or loss of watches, uniforms, Sport kits or other valuable items.
4.12 Only approved badges may be worn by learners entitled to wear them. No other logos etc may be displayed on school uniforms.
4.13 Only the blue regulation school bag is to be used.
5. HEALTHY LUNCH BOX RULES
This section is to promote healthy nutrition in our learners.
5.1 No takeaways. E.g. KFC, Debonairs
5.2 No flavoured water, energy drinks or fizzy drinks.
5.3 No pies
5.4 No sweets
5.5 Friday is treat day (1 item per learner)
Please do your best to provide healthy options for school lunch as the
diet can affect areas of learning and concentration.
6. PROPERTY AND MATERIALS
Vandalism and destruction of property is strictly forbidden.
6.1 It is the responsibility of all learners to take care of school property. The defacing of buildings, plants, desks and text books is considered a serious misdemeanour.
6.2 Parents/Guardians of Learners who willfully or negligently cause damage to the school property, will be required to make good the damage incurred and/or pay for the repair or replacement thereof.
6.3 Any breakage of, or damage to, school property must be reported immediately to a staff member.
6.4 Any sums of money and/or valuables must be handed to a staff member for safekeeping at the beginning of the day and not left in desks or bags. Radios, cellular phones, portable computers etc must not be brought to school without prior permission from a staff member, and only then, for an educational purpose. The school accepts no responsibility for learner’s private property, including loss by theft or for damages incurred.
6.5 All rubbish must be placed in the bins provided for the collection of refuse.
6.6 Running anywhere on the school premises except under supervision of a teacher, is forbidden.
6.7 Climbing up or down banks or trees is forbidden.
6.8 Climbing on jungle gyms unsupervised is strictly forbidden.
6.8 Any unclaimed items found must be handed promptly to a staff member.
6.9 During breaks learners may use the toilets but no playing is permitted in the toilets.
6.10 Food and drink may only be consumed on the playground unless specific permission has been granted.
6.11 Riding of bicycles in the school grounds is strictly forbidden.
6.12 No P.E. equipment may be used unless under teacher’s supervision.
6.13 Learners are not to touch any gardening equipment in the grounds.
7. PUNCTUALITY, ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES
7.1 Learners must abide by the set school times. School starts at 7:30 a.m. and no learner should be at School before 7.00 a.m. School closes at 1.00 p.m. for Grades 00, 0, 1 and 2. Grade 3’s go home at 2 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 1 p.m. on Fridays. If learners are dropped off before 7:00am, the school will not be responsible for damages to his/her persons.
7.2 Late arrivals: parents to sign in their child.
7.3 No learner may wait at school beyond dismissal time.
7.4 Requests from parents to remove learners from the school during school hours must be furnished in writing and addressed to the Principal. Every effort should be made to ensure that medical, dental and similar appointments are made outside of school hours.
7.5 Learners are required to be at school on every school day and parents may not exercise a prerogative in this regard except for medical reasons.
7.6 Learners participating in extramural activities will be notified of their relevant times.
8. RESTRICTED AREA
8.1 The following areas are out of bounds to learners (unless otherwise instructed by a staff member)
8.1.1 The staff room and surrounding area.
8.1.2 All staff toilets.
8.1.3 The car park unless permission is given by a staff member.
8.1.4 The general assistant’s quarters.
8.1.5 The main entrance to the school. (i.e. foyer)
8.1.6 The swimming pool area (except during P.E. lessons or under the supervision of a staff member).
8.2 Learners may not enter the classrooms before school. During breaks and after school learners may not remain in classrooms unless under supervision of a teacher.
8.3 No loitering is allowed on the corridors, outside classrooms, in toilets nor at entrance gates.
8.4 Should it be raining during break time, learners will be supervised on the corridors.
8.5 Learners may not be dropped off or collected in the school grounds.
8.6 School grounds and buildings may not be used by learners over weekends or during holidays unless accompanied by a staff member.
9. PUNISHMENT
9.1 Punishment will always be applied with moderation and good sense.
9.2 Corporal punishment may not be administered.
9.3 Learners sent to the Principal for punishment, will have their name, class and offence recorded in a specific punishment book.
9.4 Only if a learner has committed a reprehensible act, the Principal, after consultation with the Governing Body and Superintendent of Education, may consider suspension or expulsion.
10. CURRICULUM
10.1 Learners will conform to the set curriculum.
10.2 Parents will supply items of stationery.
10.3 Both text and exercise books must be preserved in good condition.
10.4 Library and text books must not be defaced in any way.
10.5 Tearing out a page in any book is forbidden.
10.6 Learners who misplace books will be asked to replace them.
10.7 Parents are to supervise homework satisfactorily, on a regular basis.
11. FEES
11.1 Fees at this school are compulsory.
11.2 Only those parents who apply in writing and who qualify according to the set criteria, will be entitled to a fee reduction.
11.3 All fees must be timeously paid in accordance with the stipulations laid down by the Governing Body.

At all times when the learner is dressed in the school uniform and is recognized as such both on the school property and/or outside the school even before or after regular school hours.

We, parents, staff and learners acknowledge that sound and equitable relations are essential for the promotion of goodwill, the educational well-being of the learners and the long-term viability of the school.

- To provide well-founded, quality education that focuses on the personal development of each learner and provides opportunity for intellectual, physical, cultural and religious development.
- To preserve the traditional values, standards and individual character of the school, whilst adapting constructively to the changes that occur.

Code of Conduct for Teachers and School Staff
Staff have the right:
- To respect their status as educators and professionals
- To have support from parents
- To have support from school management
- To organize for collective bargaining
- To the provision of appropriate teaching resources and facilities
- To teach without disruption
- To a safe, secure and occupationally healthy work environment
- To be remunerated fairly and in line with responsibilities
- To privacy in off-duty hours
- To be consulted on, and to contribute towards matters affecting the individual in particular and the school environment in general
- To exercise discipline in terms of school rules
- To access to interpretation for communications not in their own language
Staff have the responsibility:
- To behave in a principled and appropriate manner when dealing with learners, parents and co-workers
- Of being in loco parentis and ensuring the safety of learners during school hours, afternoon activities and excursions, up to and including stipulated times
- Not to endanger children through the exercising of “labour” rights
- To provide reasonable explanations for disciplinary action
- To allow as far as possible for the individuality of the child
- To be dressed in a manner which benefits a professional person at all times

- To recognize the professional status of your child’s educator, and to respect all staff as professionals.
- To be constructively involved in the governance and life of the school
- To abide by the school rules as set out above
- To teach your child/ren to adhere and respect the School rules and codes of conduct of the school
- To take responsibility for your child/ren’s education and pay for the quality you receive
- No parent may approach someone else’s child in order to discuss or chastise them because of actions of this child towards their own child
- To provide all information that the school may require for educational purposes
- To support the school in its undertakings to educate the child
- When attending any activity of the school you shall comply with the requests and arrangements of the school concerned and/or the organisers
